Nannilam constituency in Tamil Nadu has experienced a politically turbulent five years (2021-2026) under sitting MLA R. Kamaraj of the AIADMK, who won a closely contested election in 2021 with just 4,424 votes margin (46.95% vote share) against DMK's S. Jothiraman. While the constituency benefited from broader state-level development initiatives—including Tamil Nadu's ₹20,000 crore highway expansion covering 963 km, ₹8,000 crore rural roads scheme (MGSMT), and over 2.43 lakh toilets constructed under Swachh Bharat Mission since 2021-22—the most defining issue has been the corruption allegations against the sitting MLA. In July 2022, the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) raided 51 locations linked to Kamaraj, and by July 2023, filed charges for allegedly acquiring disproportionate assets worth ₹58.44 lakh during his tenure as Food and Civil Supplies Minister (2011-2021). This major controversy has overshadowed other developments and continues to remain unresolved as the 2026 elections approach. The constituency also saw residents dealing with TNEB electricity tariff hikes (up to 45%) and increased costs in essential services under the DMK state government that came to power in 2021. The political landscape has shifted dramatically with several AIADMK members, including prominent leaders like O. Panneerselvam, defecting to the DMK in 2025-2026. The AIADMK has now aligned with the BJP-led NDA alliance, while the emergence of actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a new political force adds unpredictability to the upcoming April 23, 2026 assembly elections. With 264,462 registered electors, voters in Nannilam face a choice between continuity with a corruption-tainted incumbent, the DMK's challenge backed by state power, or new alternatives. The close 2021 margin suggests every vote will matter in determining whether development initiatives or accountability for alleged corruption takes precedence.
