R. Kamaraj, 65, is a three-term AIADMK MLA from Nannilam constituency in Tamil Nadu, currently serving as Minister for Food since November 2011. A postgraduate who declares himself as an agriculturist, Kamaraj has demonstrated electoral resilience, winning consecutive elections in 2011 (92,071 votes, majority of 10,404), 2016 (100,918 votes, majority of 21,276), and 2021 (103,637 votes, majority of 4,424). Prior to his state assembly career, he served as a Rajya Sabha member and contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Kallakurichi as AIADMK candidate. He has held various party positions including Secretary of the District Medical Wing in Villupuram and membership in parliamentary committees on health and external affairs. However, Kamaraj's political career is now overshadowed by serious corruption allegations. On July 7, 2022, the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) registered an FIR against him for acquiring disproportionate assets worth Rs 58.44 lakh. The investigation expanded dramatically, with searches conducted at 51 locations, ultimately uncovering assets totaling Rs 127 crore. On July 11, 2023, DVAC filed a chargesheet against Kamaraj, his two sons, and three others, alleging he acquired shares in NARC Hotels Private Limited, purchased hotel properties in Thanjavur through associates, and constructed Sri Kamatchi Medical Centre multi-specialty hospital for his sons—all without satisfactory accounting for his known income sources. He became the third ex-AIADMK minister to face such charges since 2021. Despite these allegations, Kamaraj has maintained political visibility, organizing free health camps in his constituency and leading farmer protests in January 2022 demanding relief and direct paddy procurement mechanisms in Cauvery delta districts. His affidavit declares assets of only Rs 2.44 crore with zero liabilities and lists 5 criminal cases involving charges like criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and obstructing public servants, though it appears to understate the severity of the disproportionate assets case.
