Royapuram constituency in North Chennai witnessed a significant political shift in 2021 when DMK's Idream R. Murthy defeated six-time AIADMK MLA D. Jayakumar with a decisive margin of 27,779 votes (53.56% vote share). The constituency, home to fishing communities, port workers, and small traders, has seen development initiatives from both the DMK state government and central government during 2021-2026. At the state level, Tamil Nadu attracted ₹10.27 lakh crore in investments creating an estimated 32.33 lakh jobs by 2024, with manufacturing employment rising by 7.5% in 2022-23. The DMK government launched the 'Chennai Super 6' manifesto in April 2026 promising RO-purified drinking water, 1,000 new mini buses for connectivity, AI-based traffic management to reduce congestion by 25%, and completion of metro expansion and underground sewerage by 2027-2028. Central government projects included a ₹1,490 crore Indian Oil lubricant blending plant at Manali and broader infrastructure schemes under Bharatmala. However, persistent civic challenges have plagued the constituency. Residents continue to face severe air and dust pollution from heavy freight traffic near Royapuram bridge, sewage contamination in drinking water, and traffic bottlenecks—issues that remain central grievances. Historical infrastructure projects like the ₹750 million fishing harbour upgrade announced in 2013 and the conversion of heritage Royapuram railway station into a passenger terminal remain unclear in their completion status. Rural development schemes delivered some results: over 3.30 lakh rural houses under PM Housing Scheme, 2.43 lakh toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission, and drinking water supply to 7.15 lakh households under Jal Jeevan Yojana between 2021-2024, though urban-specific Royapuram outcomes are not well-documented. The political landscape shifted further with several AIADMK leaders including Manoj Pandian (November 2025), R. Vaithilingam (January 2026), and O. Panneerselvam (February 2026) defecting to DMK, weakening the opposition ahead of the 2026 elections. For the upcoming 2026 polls, DMK has fielded Dr. A Subair Khan (son of former minister A Rahman Khan) to defend the seat, while AIADMK's D. Jayakumar seeks a comeback, with NTK and TVK also contesting. Voters should consider whether the DMK government's broader state-level achievements translated into tangible improvements in Royapuram's long-standing environmental and infrastructure problems, and whether the promised 2026-2029 projects will materialize if the party retains power.
