A. Jayakumar

D. Jayakumar, born September 18, 1960, in Royapuram, Chennai, is a veteran AIADMK politician attempting a comeback after his 2021 electoral defeat. Over a 30-year political career, he has won the Royapuram constituency six times (1991, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016) and served in multiple high-profile positions including Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (2011-2012) and held ministerial portfolios for Finance, Fisheries, IT, Electricity, and Forests. His political journey began in 1991 when he first won Royapuram with 59.04% of votes, establishing himself as a dominant figure in this coastal constituency known for its fishing community. His ministerial career spans different AIADMK governments: he served as Minister of Fisheries, Forest and Backward Class (1991-1996), Minister of Law, IT & Electricity (2001-2006), and most recently as Minister for Fisheries and Administration reforms (2016-2021), with a brief stint as Finance Minister (February-August 2017). As Speaker from 2011-2012, he held one of the most prestigious constitutional positions in the state. His focus on the fishing community and coastal issues has been a defining feature of his political identity. However, 2021 marked a significant setback when he lost to DMK's Idream R. Murthy by over 27,000 votes, securing only 30.46% of the vote—his worst performance ever. He attributed the defeat partly to BJP's influence in the alliance dynamics. Despite this loss, he remains AIADMK's Organizing Secretary and member of its Steering Committee since October 2020, indicating his continued importance in party hierarchy. For the 2026 elections, he is contesting again from Royapuram, facing DMK's Dr. A. Subair Khan. Voters should note a critical discrepancy: the affidavit lists the candidate as 'A. Jayakumar', age 43, independent candidate running a chickpea business with assets of Rs. 6.02 lacs. However, all credible sources identify the Royapuram candidate as 'D. Jayakumar', age 64-65, senior AIADMK leader with extensive political experience. This raises serious questions about either candidate identity confusion or incomplete disclosure. The declared assets appear remarkably low for a six-time MLA with decades of ministerial experience. Royapuram faces pressing issues including air pollution from freight traffic, contaminated water, and sewage problems—challenges that intensified during his long tenure representing the constituency.
