M Dhinakaran

T.T.V. Dhinakaran, 48, is a veteran Tamil Nadu politician with over two decades of parliamentary and assembly experience, though he now contests as an independent from Royapuram. Born December 13, 1963, in Thiruthuraipoondi, he is the nephew of V.K. Sasikala, the close aide of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. His political career began within the AIADMK where he served as MP for Periyakulam (1999-2004), Rajya Sabha member (2004-2010), and held key positions including Treasurer and Deputy General Secretary before his expulsion in August 2017 amid factional conflicts following Jayalalithaa's death. Dhinakaran's most notable political achievement came in December 2017 when he won the R.K. Nagar by-election as an independent candidate with 50.32% votes, defeating the AIADMK candidate by 40,707 votes - marking the first independent victory in Tamil Nadu in nearly two decades. Following this success, he founded the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) in March 2018, positioning himself as a successor to Jayalalithaa's legacy. However, his political fortunes declined subsequently - he lost from Kovilpatti in the 2021 Assembly elections and finished runner-up in Theni during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls with 25.65% votes. Controversy has marked Dhinakaran's recent political trajectory, particularly his alliance gymnastics. He exited the BJP-led NDA in September 2025, only to rejoin by January 2026 with AMMK receiving just 11 seats in the alliance - a move critics characterize as a survival tactic rather than principled politics. His declared assets of Rs. 3.18 lakhs with zero immovable property appear unusually modest for a politician with decades of parliamentary service. While he maintains influence among the Mukkulathor community in southern Tamil Nadu, his overall political clout has diminished significantly from his 2017 peak. Voters in Royapuram should note that Dhinakaran is contesting from a new constituency outside his traditional strongholds. While he brings extensive legislative experience and proven ability to mobilize specific community votes, his recent electoral losses, frequent party switches, and limited social media engagement raise questions about his current political relevance and commitment to constituency development versus broader factional politics.
