Madathukulam constituency in Pollachi Lok Sabha segment is a predominantly rural, agriculture-dependent area that includes 18 tribal hill habitations within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. C. Mahendran of AIADMK won the 2021 election with 84,313 votes (46.35%), defeating DMK's R. Jayaramakrishnan by a margin of 6,438 votes. Over the past five years, the constituency has benefited from statewide development schemes including the operational four-laning of the Oddanchatram-Madathukulam NH section with a toll plaza at Chatrapatti, rural road improvements under the Chief Minister's Rural Road Development Programme (10,000 km statewide at ₹4,000 crore announced in June 2024), and water supply expansion under Jal Jeevan Mission (90% rural household tap connections achieved statewide). Educational initiatives like the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme (benefiting 17.53 lakh students statewide in 2025-26) and the Naan Mudhalvan skill development program launched in March 2022 have also reached the area. However, significant local grievances persist. The Amaravathi Cooperative Sugar Mill, crucial for local sugarcane farmers, has been operating with outdated machinery and its distillery division switched to sourcing molasses from other mills since October 2024, forcing local farmers to sell to private buyers at lower prices. Over 2,000 tribal residents in hill villages including Mavadappu, Kurumalai, Melkurumalai, and Kuzhipatti continue to lack road connectivity, electricity, and healthcare access, with residents demanding voting rights in local body elections. Farmers have also sought a permanent paddy procurement center and cold storage facility in Madathukulam taluk, which remain unfulfilled. Tourism development potential remains largely untapped despite local demands. The AIADMK as a party has faced broader scrutiny, with analysis showing 60 AIADMK candidates (35% of total) in the 2026 election cycle having serious criminal cases pending. The upcoming 2026 election scheduled for April 23 (results May 4) is expected to focus heavily on the sugar mill crisis, water supply issues, tribal connectivity problems, and agricultural infrastructure gaps. Voters should consider both the statewide developmental progress that has reached the constituency and the unresolved local issues—particularly the sugar mill stagnation and tribal habitation neglect—that directly impact livelihoods when making their electoral choice.
