K Shanmugavel

K Shanmugavel, 37, is contesting from Madathukulam as an independent candidate after a career spanning two decades in Tamil Nadu politics. He first entered the legislative assembly in 2001 from Udumalpet constituency on an AIADMK ticket with 56.92% vote share, and successfully retained the seat in 2006 with 46.09% votes. He shifted to Madathukulam constituency in 2011, winning with 54.71% votes and briefly serving as Minister for Rural Industries under Chief Minister Jayalalithaa before being removed in a cabinet reshuffle in November 2011. After the AIADMK split, Shanmugavel joined T.T.V. Dhinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), formed in 2018 following Dhinakaran's expulsion from AIADMK. Contesting from Madathukulam in 2021 on an AMMK ticket, he faced defeat against AIADMK's C. Mahendran, marking his first electoral loss after three consecutive victories. He is now contesting as an independent, though his current political positioning and platform remain unclear from available sources.
