C. Shanmugavelu is a veteran politician now contesting as an Independent from Madathukulam constituency, despite his affidavit declaring him as 'illiterate' engaged in 'labour work'. His actual political career spans over two decades with significant legislative experience. He began with the AIADMK party, winning the Udumalpet constituency in both 2001 (56.92% votes) and 2006 (46.09% votes). He then won Madathukulam in 2011 with a commanding 54.71% vote share (78,622 votes) as an AIADMK candidate. During this period, he was appointed Minister for Rural Industries but was sacked in November 2011 during a cabinet reshuffle by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. His political fortunes took a dramatic downturn following his switch to AMMK, a breakaway AIADMK faction founded by T.T.V. Dhinakaran. In the 2021 elections, contesting from Madathukulam as an AMMK candidate, he suffered a crushing defeat, securing only 3.58% votes (6,515 votes) - a staggering 93% decline from his 2011 performance. The AIADMK's C. Mahendran won that election with 46.35% votes (84,313 votes). This massive vote erosion suggests significant loss of public confidence following his party switch and ministerial removal. For the 2026 elections, Shanmugavelu is now contesting as an Independent, though earlier reports suggested he would run under AMMK. The discrepancy between his affidavit declarations (illiterate labourer with assets of Rs. 6.76 lakhs) and his documented political career (three-time MLA, former minister) raises questions about transparency.
