Coimbatore (South) constituency witnessed significant political and developmental activity from 2021 to 2026. BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan won the seat in the 2021 Assembly elections, defeating prominent candidates including actor-politician Kamal Haasan. The DMK-led state government announced multiple ambitious projects for the region, including a Rs 600 crore Avinashi Road flyover extension, Rs 1,555 crore underground drainage system, Rs 300 crore Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre, and a Rs 126 crore jewellery park expected to employ 3,500 people. Social welfare schemes like Pudhumai Pen (benefiting 15,741 students with Rs 1,000/month), Kalaignar Mahalir Urimai Thogai (supporting 4.61 lakh women), and free breakfast for 65,556 students were implemented. The government also provided 1.5 lakh free electricity connections to farmers and constructed 2,912 houses for the homeless poor at Rs 443.55 crore. However, the constituency faced significant controversies and civic challenges. DMK's 2026 candidate V. Senthil Balaji faced ED allegations in a cash-for-jobs case, forcing him to step down as minister. Multiple farmer protests erupted over land acquisition for industrial projects, delayed compensation for Bharathiar University land (Rs 400 crore pending despite 2022 High Court order), and the proposed Eastern Bypass threatening fertile farmlands. Residents protested water supply disruptions lasting 19 days in Ward 43, lack of monsoon preparedness causing flooding in areas like GM Nagar and Saramedu, and TNHB's failure to hand over sale deeds despite a 2014 High Court order. Minister K.N. Nehru faced ED allegations of Rs 366 crore money laundering linked to corruption in the Municipal Administration department. The constituency emerged as a 'VIP constituency' due to intensive political competition, with high-stakes contests planned for 2026 between DMK, AIADMK, NTK, and TVK. Major infrastructure announcements included Smart City projects, an IT complex offering 36,000 jobs, and improved road connectivity. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the district during 2021's second wave. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin both scheduled visits to Coimbatore ahead of the 2026 elections. Voters should consider both the substantial development announcements and welfare schemes implemented during this period, alongside persistent civic issues, corruption allegations against political leaders, unresolved land disputes, and the gap between project announcements and ground-level execution. The constituency's transformation from a traditional BJP-AIADMK stronghold to a fiercely contested battleground reflects its strategic political importance.
