Tirunelveli constituency witnessed a significant political shift in 2021 when Nainar Nagenthran of the BJP defeated the DMK, securing 92,282 votes (47.2%) with a margin of 23,107 votes. This marked a departure from the constituency's historical pattern of supporting the party forming the state government. Over the 2021-2026 period, the constituency saw substantial development initiatives including selection for the Smart Cities Mission, a ₹270 crore railway station renovation under the Amrit Bharat Scheme, and major industrial investments like VinFast's $2 billion electric vehicle plant announced in August 2025. The state government announced a mini IT park and a sewage treatment plant for Tirunelveli in the 2026 budget, while road infrastructure benefited from PM Modi's ₹5,650 crore projects inaugurated in April 2026. However, the tenure was marred by serious controversies. In April 2024, ₹3.98 crore in unaccounted cash was seized from individuals linked to MLA Nagenthran during the Lok Sabha elections, prompting the DMK to approach the Madras High Court seeking a PMLA probe for alleged money laundering and voter inducement. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption also conducted raids related to a disproportionate assets case against him. Beyond political controversies, civic issues persisted including inadequate sewage management, ineffective drainage causing monsoon flooding, and drinking water supply problems in peripheral areas. The Nanguneri Multi-product SEZ revival remained uncertain despite earlier promises. As the 2026 Assembly elections approach (scheduled for April-May 2026 with results on May 4), voters face a complex choice. The constituency has seen significant industrial investment announcements and infrastructure upgrades, particularly in roads, smart city initiatives, and employment-generating projects like the ₹32,553 crore worth of 41 MoUs signed at the TN Rising Investors Conclave in August 2025. However, long-standing civic problems remain unresolved, and the serious corruption allegations against the sitting MLA raise questions about governance integrity. Voters must weigh tangible development progress against governance concerns and unfulfilled promises on basic infrastructure like sewage management and water supply.
