Thondamuthur constituency, represented by AIADMK's S.P. Velumani since 2021, has experienced a complex five-year period marked by both development initiatives and serious controversies. The constituency benefited from state-wide programs including road expansions under the Chief Minister Road Development Scheme, water supply improvements through the Masaorambhu Stream Restoration Project (which constructed check dams and improved groundwater levels), and construction of over 2.43 lakh toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission since 2021-22. Healthcare coverage expanded with the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme increasing to ₹10 lakh per family, while employment initiatives like the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme provided skill development opportunities. However, MLA Velumani faced significant legal challenges that dominated the period. In March 2022, DVAC raids at 59 locations discovered 11 kg of gold and cryptocurrency documents in a disproportionate assets case. In September 2022, he was booked for an alleged ₹500 crore irregularity in LED street light procurement between 2015-2018. Additional corruption allegations involved tender manipulation for Chennai and Coimbatore Corporation projects. The Madras High Court quashed one FIR but refused to quash another registered by DVAC Coimbatore for criminal conspiracy and plundering public money. The constituency also grappled with civic and environmental challenges. The declining Noyyal river affected farmers, while wildlife conflicts—particularly with elephants and wild boars—resulted in fatalities including a 72-year-old farmer. Urban flooding risks increased as Thondamuthur transitioned from agrarian land to a residential suburb of Coimbatore, with inadequate drainage and garbage accumulation in water bodies remaining persistent problems. As voters approach the 2026 elections scheduled for April 23, they must weigh the constituency's development progress against the serious corruption allegations facing their sitting MLA, who is seeking a fourth consecutive term with 287,442 registered voters deciding his fate.
