Thiruporur constituency witnessed significant political and civic developments between 2021 and 2026. In the 2021 Assembly elections, VCK's S. S. Balaji won by a razor-thin margin of just 1,947 votes (0.87%) against PMK's K. Arumugam, securing 93,954 votes (41.80%) in a highly competitive contest with 76.28% voter turnout. The constituency benefited from several state and central development initiatives, including 370 km of rural roads under PMGSY, water supply projects worth ₹8.16 crore for urbanizing areas like Perumbakkam and Semmencheri, and over 7.15 lakh rural households receiving drinking water under Jal Jeevan Mission costing ₹2,123 crore. Educational initiatives like Mission Iyarkai (2022) and the Naan Mudhalvan skill development scheme were also implemented across Tamil Nadu. However, rapid urbanization in areas like Kelambakkam, Navalur, and Siruseri severely strained existing infrastructure, with residents facing persistent issues including incomplete underground drainage projects, inadequate water supply, poor road conditions, and sewage management failures. Residents' associations like FOMRRA emerged to voice concerns about civic neglect and traffic congestion. The broader political environment was marked by serious corruption allegations, including the Enforcement Directorate accusing Minister K.N. Nehru of a ₹1,020 crore bribery and tender-fixing scam and a cash-for-jobs racket where government positions were allegedly sold for ₹25-35 lakh each. The District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court operated from a community hall for three years due to lack of a dedicated building. Looking ahead to the 2026 elections scheduled for April-May, Thiruporur remains a highly contested seat with multiple parties including SPA, PMK (with internal factions), NTK, and new entrant TVK fielding candidates. Tamil Nadu overall attracted ₹9.74 lakh crore in investments generating 31 lakh jobs between 2021-2023, and industrial projects like VinFast's ₹16,000 crore EV plant and Tata Motors' ₹9,000 crore facility were established statewide. Voters should consider both the macro-level development initiatives implemented across the state and the persistent local civic issues that have remained unresolved, particularly infrastructure gaps in rapidly urbanizing areas, when making their electoral decision.
