Thiruparankundram constituency has experienced a turbulent five-year period from 2021 to 2026, marked by political stability, state-wide development initiatives, but also significant communal tensions. V. V. Rajan Chellappa of the AIADMK won the seat in the 2021 Assembly elections with a margin of 29,489 votes against CPI(M)'s Ponnuthai, maintaining AIADMK's presence in the constituency. During this period, residents have benefited from broader Tamil Nadu state schemes including the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (₹1,000 monthly financial assistance for women), Pudhumai Penn and Tamil Pudhalvan support (₹1,500 monthly for students), and promises of infrastructure improvements under the Chennai Super-6 manifesto and statewide development plans. However, the constituency gained national attention due to the highly polarizing Karthigai Deepam festival controversy, which became a flashpoint for communal tensions. The dispute centered on whether the traditional deepam (lamp) should be lit on a stone pillar near a dargah (Muslim shrine), sparking legal battles that reached the Supreme Court and dividing the community along religious lines. Hindu groups, supported by BJP and Hindutva organizations, demanded the right to light the lamp on the disputed pillar, while the DMK government and Muslim groups opposed it, citing fears of communal violence. This controversy has deeply affected the social fabric of the constituency and become a major political issue. Persistent civic problems including flooding during monsoons, inadequate garbage disposal, and water shortages have plagued the constituency, with residents expressing dissatisfaction over slow implementation of the Jal Jeevan Scheme for piped drinking water. Several infrastructure projects have faced delays due to bureaucratic issues and funding constraints. The MLA has criticized the DMK state government for corruption and unfulfilled promises, though no major criminal allegations have been leveled against him personally. As the 2026 elections approach (voting scheduled for April 23, 2026), voters face a competitive contest between AIADMK's incumbent Rajan Chellappa, DMK's Krithika Thangapandi, NTK's Prof. Sathiya Devi, and TVK's CTR Nirmal Kumar. Voters should consider both the state-wide welfare schemes that have reached them and the unresolved local issues of communal harmony, civic infrastructure, and water supply that continue to affect daily life.
