Sholinganallur constituency, represented by DMK's S. Aravindramesh who won with 171,558 votes in 2021, experienced rapid urbanization between 2021-2026, driven by its thriving IT corridor housing companies like Wipro, Infosys, and TCS. However, this growth exposed severe infrastructure gaps. The constituency struggled with persistent civic challenges including irregular drinking water supply forcing residents to rely on private tankers, frequent monsoon flooding due to inadequate stormwater drains (with waterlogging taking over two days to recede in areas like Pallikaranai), severe traffic congestion on Old Mahabalipuram Road and East Coast Road, and frequent power outages with voltage fluctuations. The Perungudi dumpyard remained a major environmental concern throughout this period. Some positive initiatives included the Mission Iyarkai scheme (2022) promoting environmental education in government schools, and the Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Housing project supporting affordable housing for the urban poor. However, critical projects faced significant delays. The Metro Phase-2 extension, seen as crucial for reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity, remained delayed throughout the period. A promised desalination plant for reliable piped water supply also faced implementation delays. The Federation of OMR Resident Associations (FOMRRA) organized protests demanding better amenities and issued a 12-point manifesto in 2026 highlighting unmet basic needs including improved bus frequencies, last-mile connectivity through feeder buses and e-rickshaws, and proper drainage systems. While MLA Aravindramesh has been active in addressing constituency concerns, many 2021 election promises regarding improved drainage, water supply, and traffic management remain unfulfilled as of 2026. The constituency's challenges illustrate the tension between rapid economic growth and lagging civic infrastructure. Voters should consider whether the current representation has adequately balanced development with delivery of basic amenities, and evaluate candidates' specific plans for addressing persistent water scarcity, flooding, traffic congestion, and accelerating delayed Metro Phase-2 implementation.
