Killiyoor constituency in Kanniyakumari district has remained a Congress stronghold over the past five years, with S. Rajeshkumar serving as MLA after winning the 2021 election with a commanding 59.76% vote share (101,541 votes) and a margin of 55,400 votes. The constituency, which comprises about 15 coastal villages with an economy driven by agriculture and fishing, has seen both development and persistent challenges during this period. While Tamil Nadu as a whole attracted significant investments under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's administration since May 2021 (₹9.74 lakh crore creating 31 lakh jobs between 2021-2023), and Prime Minister Modi launched multiple infrastructure projects worth thousands of crores across the state—including railway electrification and road projects in neighboring areas—Killiyoor's specific local demands have largely remained unmet. The most significant controversy during this period was the January 2026 conviction of MLA S. Rajeshkumar by the Nagercoil principal sub-court, sentencing him and two others to three months' imprisonment for obstructing revenue officials from removing encroachments on government land in a 2014 case. This conviction highlighted concerns about corruption and abuse of power. Meanwhile, the fishing communities of Killiyoor have continued to voice frustration over decades-old unfulfilled promises, particularly the construction of a bridge across the Thamirabarani river connecting Thengapattinam and Erayumanthurai—a promise repeated in multiple elections but never delivered. Other persistent civic issues include poor solid waste management, with rampant dumping of waste near the AVM canal and other waterbodies, and the long-standing demand to upgrade the Primary Health Centre at Thoothoor into a full-fledged hospital. While major industrial investments came to other parts of Tamil Nadu (VinFast's ₹16,000 crore plant in Thoothukudi in August 2025, Tata Motors' ₹9,000 crore plant in Ranipet in February 2026), and infrastructure projects were inaugurated in neighboring districts, Killiyoor's coastal villages appear to have been left behind. As voters head to the 2026 elections, they should consider both the MLA's legal troubles and the pattern of broken promises on basic infrastructure that have persisted for decades, while weighing these against the broader state-level development initiatives.
