Kallakurichi (SC) constituency witnessed significant developments between 2021 and 2026 under MLA Senthilkumar.M (AIADMK), though the DMK government at the state level implemented most welfare schemes. Major achievements included the establishment of Government Kallakurichi Medical College in 2021 with a budget of ₹370 crore, providing tertiary healthcare and medical education. Infrastructure improvements came through NH-79 upgrades and various state highway connections. Key state schemes like Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai (₹1,000/month to women), Naan Mudhalvan skill development program, and the Punal 1916 water grievance redressal system launched in 2026 benefited residents. However, the constituency suffered a devastating tragedy in June 2024 when 66 people died from consuming methanol-laced illicit liquor, exposing a nexus between bootleggers and corrupt police officials. This incident led to the transfer of the District Collector and suspension of the Superintendent of Police. The tragedy severely damaged public trust in governance and law enforcement. In August 2023, violent protests erupted following a Class 12 student's death, revealing underlying caste tensions between Dalit and Gounder communities. These protests resulted in arson and allegations of caste-based targeting during police action. Persistent civic issues included limited industrial development forcing residents to migrate for employment, and long-pending demands like expansion of Ulundurpet bus stand and taluk hospital remained unfulfilled. Despite becoming a separate district in 2019, tangible development benefits have been limited. Voters should weigh the medical college establishment and state welfare schemes against the catastrophic hooch tragedy, ongoing employment challenges, and slow progress on local infrastructure demands when making their decision.
