Vedharanyam constituency in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, was represented by O.S. Manian of AIADMK from 2021 to 2026 after winning the 2021 election with 78,719 votes (50.02%) against DMK's candidate. The tenure saw implementation of several state and central government schemes, including the Jal Jeevan Mission which provided drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural households across Tamil Nadu, and the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) which constructed over 2.43 lakh toilets since 2021-22. Under various schemes like MLACDS (₹702 crore annually for 2021-24), PM Housing Scheme (over 3.30 lakh houses constructed statewide between May 2021 and October 2024), and Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam (₹3,500 crore for over 1 lakh concrete houses in 2024-25), development works were undertaken across rural areas. However, Vedharanyam faced persistent civic challenges throughout this period. Recurring flooding affected low-lying areas like Vadaperumbakkam and Manjambakkam during monsoons, with inadequate drainage and poor maintenance of stormwater drains exacerbating the problem. Despite Metro Water collecting taxes for over a decade, many homes still lack piped drinking water connections. A crucial ₹150 crore harbour project at Arcottuthurai, initiated during the previous AIADMK regime, remained incomplete, causing losses to fishermen due to fluctuating water levels and limited sea access. Families affected by Cyclone Gaja in 2018 were still awaiting funds to complete sanctioned houses. Road infrastructure issues, including bottlenecks on the Madhavaram-Red Hills Road, and incomplete canal projects for flood mitigation added to public grievances. Observers noted that O.S. Manian's welfare delivery during 2021-26 under the DMK state government was limited compared to his earlier tenure as a minister, when he was credited with reviving temple car festivals, constructing bridges, and dredging lakes. Salt pan workers faced land disputes, irrigation canals required better maintenance affecting agricultural productivity, and waste management remained inadequate. Despite these governance challenges, no major criminal cases or corruption charges were reported against the MLA during this period. The AIADMK faced internal strife with several leaders including O. Panneerselvam and P.H. Manoj Pandian defecting to DMK in 2026. As Vedharanyam heads to elections on April 23, 2026, voters should consider both the implementation of state-wide development schemes and the persistent local issues that remained unresolved. The constituency's challenges with flooding, drinking water supply, incomplete infrastructure projects, and agricultural support require urgent attention. With DMK fielding Ma. Me. Pugazhendi against Manian's likely re-contest, voters face a choice between continuity and change in addressing these long-standing concerns.
