Tiruppur (South) constituency witnessed significant development activity between 2021 and 2026 under DMK MLA K. Selvaraj, who won by a narrow margin of 4,709 votes (2.72%) in 2021. Major infrastructure improvements included the expedited fourth drinking water scheme providing 1,17,436 house connections, construction of 29 overhead tanks under AMRUT scheme for 100% water supply coverage, and road widening projects including the Mettukadai-Moothampalayam Road (4.2 km). Healthcare infrastructure saw substantial upgrades with an 86-bed government hospital in Velampalayam upgraded to 100 beds, and multiple primary health centers inaugurated. The state government's initiatives including small-scale IT parks (Tidal Neo Parks) and skill development schemes were implemented. However, the most significant controversy that has dominated local politics is the prolonged garbage dumping issue in Mudalipalayam and Nallur areas. For years, residents have protested against Tiruppur Corporation's practice of dumping waste from 60 wards into abandoned stone quarries, demanding these areas be declared 'contaminated zones.' The Nallur-Mudalipalayam Environmental Protection Committee has become so frustrated that they plan to field multiple candidates in elections purely to split votes as a political protest. Water scarcity from the polluted Noyyal River and the broader Cauvery water dispute also affected the region. The constituency was impacted by COVID-19's severe effects on the textile industry, which is the economic backbone of Tiruppur. A tragic crowd crush at actor-politician Vijay's rally in nearby Karur district in 2025 resulted in 41 deaths, raising concerns about political rally safety. As voters approach the 2026 elections, they should weigh infrastructure improvements against the unresolved environmental crisis that has persisted throughout the term, and consider which party can effectively address the garbage contamination issue that has become the defining grievance of this constituency.
