K.PONMUDY

K. Ponmudy of the DMK represented Tirukkoyilur constituency from 2021 to 2026 after winning the 2021 election with a decisive margin of 59,680 votes (57% vote share). However, this tenure was marked by significant legal troubles and limited visible development. In December 2023, Ponmudy was convicted by the Madras High Court in a disproportionate assets case and sentenced to three years in jail with a fine of ₹50 lakhs, related to wealth accumulated during his earlier tenure as Mining Minister (2006-2011). The Enforcement Directorate also raided him and his MP son Gautham Sigamani in 2023 in a money laundering case linked to alleged mining license irregularities that caused an estimated ₹28 crore loss to the state exchequer. The constituency, which is largely agrarian, faced persistent civic infrastructure challenges during this period. Voters expressed disappointment over the lack of a robust underground drainage system, encroachments on waterbodies, and administrative confusion caused by the bifurcation where the revenue district falls under Kallakurichi while the Assembly constituency remains in Villupuram. Long-pending demands for a Government Arts and Science College and a Government Girls Higher Secondary School remained unfulfilled. Protests also erupted over the proposed location of a new bus stand in the town. Available information indicates very limited concrete development projects or infrastructure improvements were implemented during this five-year period. For the 2026 elections scheduled on April 23, the DMK has replaced Ponmudy with his son Gowtham Sigamani, marking a generational shift. Voters should consider both the legal controversies that overshadowed this tenure and the reported lack of development progress in addressing civic infrastructure needs. The constituency has seen political realignment with several AIADMK members joining the DMK, and new entrant TVK (actor Vijay's party) is also contesting. Voters face a choice between continuity with new leadership, change, or new alternatives as they assess whether their concerns about development and governance will be addressed.
