Tiruchuli constituency in Tamil Nadu has been represented by Thangam Thenarasu of the DMK since the 2021 Assembly elections, when he won with 59.41% of the vote (102,225 votes) against AIADMK's S. Rajasekar. The constituency witnessed significant statewide infrastructure investments during 2021-2026, including improvements in rural roads, water supply, and healthcare. The DMK government announced a second phase of a ₹4,000 crore project to improve 10,000 km of rural roads across Tamil Nadu, while over 88% of rural households in the broader Tiruchi district received piped drinking water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission at a cost of ₹687.87 crore. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated development projects worth ₹5,600 crore in nearby Trichy in March 2026, which included energy infrastructure and rural roads. However, the constituency experienced the COVID-19 pandemic's severe impact during 2021-2022, requiring lockdown measures, vaccination drives, and relief packages. The period was marked by significant legal controversies involving MLA Thangam Thenarasu, who serves as Tamil Nadu's Finance Minister. In August 2024, the Madras High Court set aside his discharge in a disproportionate assets case, directing trial proceedings, though the Supreme Court stayed the revival in September 2024. The case remains legally contentious and concerns allegations of accumulating assets disproportionate to known income sources. Meanwhile, local demands for infrastructure upgrades persisted, including calls to upgrade Major District Roads (MDR 718 and MDR 638) to National Highway status, establishment of new SIDCO and SIPCOT industrial complexes for employment generation, and improvements to bus stands and railway services. As the 2026 Assembly elections approach (scheduled for April 23, 2026, with results on May 4), Tiruchuli remains a DMK stronghold. The constituency has seen campaign activities from multiple parties, with national leaders including PM Modi, Arvind Kejriwal, and Congress leaders planning or conducting rallies. Employment and transport issues remain significant voter concerns despite three consecutive DMK victories since 2011. Voters should consider both the statewide development initiatives that have benefited the region and the unresolved local infrastructure demands, alongside the ongoing legal challenges facing their sitting MLA, when making their electoral decision.
