Tiruchendur constituency, represented by MLA Anitha R. Radhakrishnan (DMK) since her 2021 re-election, has witnessed significant development initiatives alongside persistent controversies over the past five years. Major infrastructure projects include a ₹147 crore road development covering 37.06 km inaugurated in two phases, and the planning of a new four-lane road connecting Thoothukudi-Tiruchendur-Kanniyakumari spanning 104 km. Under the Jal Jeevan Scheme, drinking water supply was ensured for over 7.15 lakh rural houses at ₹2,123 crore. The constituency also benefited from state-wide initiatives including over 3.30 lakh houses under PMAY, the Naan Mudhalvan skill development scheme, and major industrial investments like VinFast's ₹16,000 crore EV plant in nearby Thoothukudi. However, a groundwater quality study revealed concerning results with 41% of samples showing poor quality and 39% inappropriate for drinking. The tenure has been overshadowed by serious legal challenges against MLA Radhakrishnan. Since 2019, she has faced investigations by DVAC and the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly accumulating disproportionate assets worth ₹2.07 crore during her 2001-2006 ministerial tenure. In 2025, the ED attached properties worth ₹1.3 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The Madras High Court granted an interim stay on trial proceedings in April 2026 after the ED sought to transfer the case from Thoothukudi to Madurai. These allegations have fueled opposition criticism and raised questions about governance accountability. Persistent civic issues continue to plague residents despite development initiatives. Water scarcity remains severe in coastal and semi-urban areas, with residents dependent on irregular supply and costly tanker water. Monsoon flooding due to poor drainage infrastructure, inadequate garbage disposal around the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple area, neglected interior roads, and insufficient public transport remain unresolved. Fisherfolk have protested coastal erosion and lack of government support for subsidies and livelihood security. Residents express frustration over what they perceive as broken election promises regarding basic amenities like drinking water, proper roads, and healthcare facilities, despite Radhakrishnan's continuous representation since 2006. As voters approach the 2026 elections scheduled for April 23, they face a complex assessment: significant infrastructure investments and state-wide welfare schemes versus serious corruption allegations against their sitting MLA, ongoing civic challenges, and unfulfilled basic amenity promises. The constituency's development trajectory, legal proceedings outcome, and responsiveness to long-standing civic grievances should weigh heavily in voter decisions.
