Sulur constituency in Coimbatore district has seen mixed progress under AIADMK MLA V.P. Kandasamy, who won in 2021 with 49.23% of votes (118,968 votes). The period from 2021-2026 brought significant infrastructure announcements including a ₹7,565 crore, 6-lane Coimbatore-Karur highway spanning 182 km, and Tamil Nadu's broader ₹20,000 crore national highway expansion covering 963 km of four-lane roads. A major development was Chief Minister Stalin's announcement of semiconductor parks in Sulur and Palladam under the state's Semiconductor Mission-2030, positioning the constituency for industrial growth. Housing schemes like the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam Scheme (₹7,000 crore for 2 lakh houses) and rural road improvements (₹4,000 crore for 10,000 km in the second phase announced June 2024) aimed at broader regional development. However, the constituency faced persistent civic challenges. Solid waste management remained poor, with waste being dumped in quarries or burned. The Noyyal River continued to suffer from industrial and sewage pollution. The powerloom sector, employing around 75,000 workers, declined sharply with looms dropping from 2.5 lakh to 1.75 lakh over five years, though wage issues were settled in 2025. Long-standing demands for a government arts and science college remained unfulfilled. Residents also protested inadequate civic amenities and infrastructure compared to other Coimbatore constituencies. As the 2026 election approaches (scheduled for April 23, 2026), voters should weigh the announced large-scale projects and industrial potential against the unresolved local civic issues, environmental degradation, and the struggling powerloom industry that remains vital to the local economy.
