Palani constituency in Dindigul district has been represented by I.P. Senthil Kumar of the DMK since winning the 2021 election with a margin of 30,056 votes (52.86%). Over the past five years, the constituency benefited from state-wide development initiatives under the Stalin-led DMK government, including improvements under the MLA Constituency Development Scheme (MLACDS) with ₹702 crore annual allocation, Jal Jeevan Mission providing drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural households across Tamil Nadu, and various road, healthcare, and education projects. However, the constituency continues to face significant challenges including chronic water scarcity with only 35.54% tap water coverage in the region, and the long-promised Varikapudisela irrigation project remains unimplemented despite repeated inaugurations. Controversy has marked Senthil Kumar's tenure, particularly the August 2025 Enforcement Directorate raids targeting him and his father, Minister I. Periyasamy, over a 2012 disproportionate assets case. The DMK claimed these raids were politically motivated ahead of the 2026 elections. Additionally, the DMK government faced public criticism for rising taxation including electricity tariff hikes up to 45%, property tax increases up to 150%, and a 28-month delay in implementing the promised ₹1,000 monthly assistance for women. While state-wide schemes like Naan Mudhalvan (skill development) and various infrastructure projects were implemented, specific ground-level impact in Palani remains difficult to assess due to limited constituency-specific data. As the 2026 elections approach with candidates already announced from CPI(M), AIADMK, NTK, and the new TVK party, voters face a choice between continuing with DMK's governance model or seeking change. Key considerations include the ongoing legal cases against the MLA's family, unfulfilled infrastructure promises like irrigation projects, persistent water scarcity issues, and the broader question of whether state-level development initiatives have adequately reached this constituency. The AIADMK's Edappadi Palaniswami has intensified campaigning in the region, criticizing DMK's governance and promising to restore discontinued welfare schemes.
