Nagercoil constituency in Tamil Nadu witnessed significant political and developmental activity between 2021 and 2026. In the April 6, 2021 Assembly election, BJP's M. R. Gandhi won with 88,804 votes (48.21%), defeating DMK's N. Suresh Rajan by a margin of 11,669 votes. The constituency saw multiple infrastructure initiatives including railway doubling projects (21 km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari and 102 km Nagercoil–Vanchi Maniyachi lines), AMRUT water supply improvements, underground sewerage schemes, and Smart City projects. Prime Minister Modi unveiled projects worth ₹5,650 crore in Tamil Nadu in March 2026. In the 2022 urban civic body elections, DMK won 24 out of 52 wards in Nagercoil Municipal Corporation, with R. Mahesh becoming the first Mayor, while BJP secured 11 seats. Despite development initiatives, the constituency faced persistent civic issues. Coastal residents complained about sewage intrusion into the sea affecting fisheries and tourism, recurring flooding due to poor drainage, and inadequate waste management with delayed garbage clearance. Water scarcity concerns and poor infrastructure implementation led to visible discontent among residents, particularly in coastal villages, during the 2026 election period. While funds were reportedly allocated for various projects, residents expressed dissatisfaction with unfulfilled promises and lack of visible impact on ground-level problems. The constituency heads into the April 9, 2026 Assembly election with 257,022 registered voters. The contest is expected to be primarily between BJP and DMK, with BJP attempting to retain the seat through Prime Minister Modi's roadshow in Nagercoil. Voters should consider both the railway and infrastructure projects initiated during this period alongside the unresolved civic issues like sewage management, flooding, and waste disposal that have affected daily life. The gap between announced projects and their actual implementation on the ground remains a key concern for residents as they prepare to cast their votes.
