Manachanallur constituency in Tamil Nadu, represented by S. Kathiravan of the DMK since 2021, has experienced a mixed record of development and governance challenges over the past five years. The constituency benefited from state-wide initiatives including the Chief Minister's Rural Road Development Programme (₹4,000 crore for 10,000 km of rural roads announced in 2024), the Jal Jeevan Mission providing drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural houses across Tamil Nadu, and construction of over 2.43 lakh toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission since 2021-2022. Healthcare access improved through the transformation of Primary Healthcare Centers into 24x7 Health & Wellness Centres, while housing schemes like PMAY-G constructed over 3.30 lakh houses in rural Tamil Nadu between May 2021 and October 2024. However, these achievements were accompanied by significant challenges. Residents faced severe drainage problems with sewage mixing with rainwater due to poorly maintained infrastructure, and a planned drainage canal upgrade was abandoned due to financial constraints. The constituency saw 17 Model Code of Conduct violations during elections, and tragically, a 25-year-old woman died by suicide alleging abuse by DMK workers. Broader issues affecting residents included successive electricity tariff hikes (up to 45%), water charges increases (5-10%), and corruption allegations against the DMK government, including a cash-for-jobs scandal involving Minister K.N. Nehru investigated by the Enforcement Directorate. Key election promises remained unfulfilled, particularly the ₹1,000 monthly assistance for women which was delayed for over 28 months and implemented with limited eligibility criteria. Voters should weigh the infrastructure improvements and social welfare schemes against persistent civic problems, broken promises, governance concerns, and the rising cost of living when evaluating the constituency's progress over these five years.
