Madurai South constituency, represented by M. Boominathan of MDMK (allied with DMK) since winning the 2021 election with a margin of 6,515 votes, has seen mixed development outcomes over the past five years. On the infrastructure front, several major projects were announced including the Madurai Metro Rail Project (DPR submitted in December 2024), the Madurai Outer Ring Road (53 km four-lane highway), and a Rs. 784 crore water supply scheme benefiting Melur, Avaniyapuram, and Tirumangalam municipalities. The Rs. 174 crore Periyar shopping complex under the Smart City Mission and the promised All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with 750 beds were also significant initiatives. However, civic problems have persisted throughout this period. The Vaigai River has become severely polluted with untreated sewage flowing directly from areas like Azhwarpuram and Anna Nagar, affecting downstream districts. Residents have consistently complained about inadequate drainage, poor road conditions, ineffective waste management, and neglected water bodies that remain dumping grounds. The AIIMS project, initially announced in 2015 with foundation laid in 2019, remains incomplete as of 2026, drawing sharp criticism from Chief Minister M. K. Stalin who blamed the central government for delays. Political tensions erupted over the declaration of the sacred Tirupparankundram hill as Waqf Board property, sparking protests and legal disputes. A 2026 analysis of the DMK government's 505-point manifesto revealed significant shortfalls in delivered promises, including unimplemented commitments on fuel prices, agricultural support, and welfare schemes. As voters head to polls scheduled for April 23, 2026, they should weigh the announced development projects against the persistent civic issues, stalled AIIMS project, river pollution crisis, and unfulfilled election promises that have defined these five years.
