KADAMBUR RAJU

Kovilpatti constituency, represented by AIADMK MLA Kadambur Raju since his 2021 victory with 68,556 votes (38.13%), has experienced mixed governance outcomes over the past five years. The constituency has benefited from several state-level initiatives including the Jal Jeevan Scheme (covering 7.15 lakh rural houses at ₹2,123 crore), construction of 2.43 lakh toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission, and 3.30 lakh houses under the Prime Minister's Housing Scheme between May 2021 and October 2024. Under the MLA Constituency Development Scheme, ₹702 crore was allocated annually for 2021-24, resulting in over 34,000 works undertaken with 26,000 completed. The constituency's connectivity along National Highway 44 provides links to major cities like Madurai and Tirunelveli. However, Kovilpatti continues to face significant challenges that have eroded public confidence. The most critical issue is a severe drinking water crisis that has persisted for over 50 years without resolution, despite multiple governments. This prompted manufacturers and residents to demand that Kovilpatti be declared a separate district, as they claim the town has declined relative to Thoothuvalai (the current district headquarters 70 km away) since the 1986 bifurcation. MLA Kadambur Raju acknowledged that a bifurcation proposal was submitted during the previous AIADMK regime, but no progress has materialized. The constituency also faces infrastructure deficits including poor road facilities and inadequate basic amenities. Additionally, Kadambur Raju was involved in a 2017 controversy when police filed an FIR for allegedly obstructing income tax officials during raids. The political landscape has remained active with the next assembly election scheduled for April 23, 2026. While the constituency has received its share of statewide schemes in education, healthcare, and housing, the unresolved water crisis and demands for administrative recognition reflect deeper governance challenges. Voters should consider both the incremental development delivered through state schemes and the persistent failure to address the constituency's most fundamental need—access to drinking water—when making their electoral choice. The gap between statewide welfare initiatives and local-specific problem-solving remains a key issue for Kovilpatti's future.
