Kavundampalayam, Tamil Nadu's second-largest assembly constituency in Coimbatore district, has experienced a mixed five-year period from 2021 to 2026. P. R. G. Arunkumar of AIADMK won the seat in the 2021 elections with 135,669 votes (44.19%), defeating DMK's R. Krishnan by 9,776 votes. While the constituency benefited from statewide development initiatives under Chief Minister M. K. Stalin's DMK government—including the Kalaignar Nagarpura Mempattu Thittam urban development scheme launched in September 2021, rural housing programs (over 3.30 lakh houses built statewide), and the Jal Jeevan Scheme providing drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural households—specific local projects for Kavundampalayam were not prominently documented. The constituency faced persistent civic issues, particularly poor road conditions in areas off the main Mettupalayam road. Residents complained about damaged roads, encroachments causing traffic snarls, and poorly executed patch works that posed safety risks to motorists. Despite having two flyovers on Mettupalayam road, infrastructure challenges remained unresolved. The period also saw significant political upheaval in Tamil Nadu, with multiple AIADMK MLAs being expelled or resigning, including O. Panneerselvam and others who eventually joined the DMK between 2022 and 2026. No criminal cases or corruption allegations against sitting MLA Arunkumar were documented during this period. As voters approach the scheduled April 23, 2026 assembly elections, they should consider both the statewide welfare schemes that reached the constituency and the persistent local infrastructure problems that affected daily life. The lack of documented constituency-specific development projects raises questions about local-level governance effectiveness, while the broader political instability in AIADMK may influence voter sentiment.
