Katpadi constituency in Tamil Nadu has been represented by DMK's Duraimurugan since 1996, who won his 10th term in 2021 by a narrow margin of just 746 votes. The 2021-2026 period has been marked by both development efforts and serious controversies. On the positive side, the rejuvenation of twin lakes near Katpadi (Kazhinjur and Dharapadavedu) was completed in early 2024 at a cost of ₹28.45 crore, including desilting, deepening, and construction of walkways and boating facilities. The constituency also benefited from state-wide schemes and a proposed Smart City plan aimed at improving economic development and quality of life. However, significant challenges have overshadowed these achievements. In April 2025, the Madras High Court directed a Vellore Special Court to frame charges against Duraimurugan and his family in a disproportionate assets case from 1996-2001, alleging accumulation of ₹3.92 crore worth of assets beyond known income. The trial was ongoing as of February 2026 with a six-month extension granted to complete proceedings. Civic issues have also plagued the constituency, including chronic traffic congestion at Katpadi Junction (a major rail and road hub), inadequate drainage causing seasonal flooding, water shortages in peri-urban areas, and garbage management problems. Protests erupted in nearby villages like Bellahalli over pollution from landfills, leading to a ₹550 crore cleanup package announcement in February 2026. Residents have complained about unfulfilled campaign promises, particularly regarding road upgrades, improved public transport, expanded healthcare facilities near CMC and VIT, and affordable housing schemes that saw limited implementation due to bureaucratic delays. Infrastructure projects for last-mile connectivity near the railway station and VIT University remain stalled, causing daily commute difficulties. Students and women's groups have organized protests demanding better safety measures, street lighting, and job opportunities. Land disputes involving tribal and Dalit communities, along with alleged builder encroachments, have added to public grievances. As voters head to the April 2026 elections, they should weigh Duraimurugan's three-decade political experience and specific completed projects like the lake rejuvenation against ongoing corruption proceedings, his narrow 2021 victory margin reflecting voter dissatisfaction, persistent civic neglect, and numerous unfulfilled promises. The constituency faces fundamental infrastructure and governance challenges that require urgent attention, regardless of which party wins.
