The Kanniyakumari constituency experienced political transition during 2021-2026, with Thalavai Sundaram of AIADMK winning the April 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election with 109,828 votes (48.79%), defeating DMK's S. Austin by 16,210 votes. This period saw the constituency benefit from broader Tamil Nadu state development initiatives, including the ongoing Kanniyakumari-Thiruvananthapuram railway line doubling project (foundation stone laid in 2018), proposals for RO-purified drinking water systems, and state-wide employment programs like the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme. However, these state-level initiatives were overshadowed by persistent local grievances. The constituency faced significant civic and agricultural challenges throughout this period. Paddy cultivation declined drastically from 25,000 hectares to just 4,500 hectares, with farmers complaining about poor maintenance of irrigation canals from Pechiparai and Perunchani dams and lack of essential machinery at procurement centers. Coastal residents in approximately 15 villages voiced strong dissatisfaction with poorly executed development projects, citing ongoing sewage intrusion into the sea despite sanctioned funds, flooding problems, and traffic congestion at the fishing harbor due to narrow 20-30 feet wide roads. Fishermen demanded better infrastructure including police outposts, fire stations, and a bypass road. The 2026 assembly elections witnessed an intense triangular contest between the Congress-DMK alliance, BJP-AIADMK, and the new entrant Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), reflecting evolving political dynamics. Key projects remained stalled, including the sewage management system and groyne extension at Periyanayaki Street, leading to continued environmental and health hazards. The constituency's historical pattern of alternating between AIADMK and DMK, combined with unresolved issues around agriculture decline, infrastructure neglect, and broken promises, presents voters with critical questions about governance effectiveness and accountability as they consider their electoral choices.
