Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (R.K. Nagar) constituency experienced significant political and developmental changes between 2021 and 2026. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK's J. John Ebenezer won with 95,763 votes (51.2%), defeating AIADMK's R.S. Raajesh and marking a DMK gain in this historically volatile constituency once represented by J. Jayalalithaa. The period saw substantial state-level development initiatives benefiting the area, including upgrades to 9,000 km of urban roads (₹3,750 crore allocation), 71 major drinking water projects (₹9,000 crore), 17 underground sewerage projects (₹1,777 crore), and installation of over 3.65 lakh streetlights across urban areas. Education received attention with 1,384 new classrooms added and 20 lakh college students receiving tablets or laptops. Social welfare schemes like Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (₹1,000 monthly assistance to women) and free bus travel for women were implemented, benefiting approximately 50 lakh women daily. However, the constituency continued to grapple with persistent civic problems. Residents repeatedly complained about poor road conditions, traffic congestion from railway level crossings, stalled Metro Rail construction, power outages, non-functional street lights, and inadequate maintenance of slum board tenements. The legacy of the 2017 by-election cash-for-votes scandal remained a dark mark on the constituency's reputation. Sanitation workers protested against privatization of solid waste management in 2024-2025, with Chennai police issuing dispersal notices. During area sabhas resumed after three months, residents flagged issues including water stagnation, inadequate school infrastructure, and increasing criminal activities like ganja selling. Despite being labeled a 'VIP constituency' due to its political significance, residents expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises and feeling neglected by elected representatives. The Metro Rail project remained stalled, and infrastructure improvements promised during elections failed to materialize adequately. As the 2026 elections approach in April-May, voters face a choice between evaluating the DMK government's welfare schemes and state-level development projects against persistent local civic issues and unmet promises. The constituency's working-class electorate will likely prioritize livelihood security, housing, sanitation, and basic infrastructure while considering whether the current representation has delivered on ground-level improvements beyond broader state initiatives.
