Dharapuram (SC) constituency experienced a closely contested political landscape from 2021-2026, with MLA Kayalvizhi N (DMK) winning by a razor-thin margin of just 1,393 votes in 2021—less than the NOTA votes cast. The DMK government implemented several statewide initiatives that benefited the constituency, including the Naan Mudhalvan skill development scheme (launched March 2022), Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme for students, and a massive road relaying program announced for 2025-2026 covering 11,872 km across Tamil Nadu. Locally, Dharapuram Municipality initiated 56 development projects worth ₹4.7 crore under the 'Namakku Naame' scheme, including upgrades to 14 tar roads, stormwater drains, and deep bore wells. However, the constituency has faced persistent challenges. Chronic water scarcity remains the most pressing issue, with women staging road blockades to protest inadequate drinking water supply and accusing local DMK officials of unfulfilled promises. Farmers have been protesting for 151 days demanding full compensation for land acquired for the Nallathangal Dam over 20 years ago. The upgraded 250-bed Government Hospital still lacks adequate medical and support staff. Groundwater depletion and limited irrigation facilities continue to affect agriculture, forcing some farmers to grow fodder instead of cash crops. As voters approach the 2026 elections, they should weigh the statewide development initiatives and local infrastructure improvements against unresolved water crisis issues, healthcare gaps, and long-standing farmer grievances. The extremely narrow 2021 victory margin suggests this remains a highly competitive constituency where voter concerns about basic amenities like water supply could prove decisive.
