Bargur constituency in Krishnagiri district witnessed a significant political shift in 2021 when DMK's D. Mathiazhagan defeated AIADMK's A. Krishnan with a margin of 12,614 votes (49.06% vs 42.70%). Over the past five years, the constituency benefited from several statewide schemes including the Jal Jeevan Mission (providing drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural houses at ₹2,123 crore), Swachh Bharat Mission (constructing 2.43 lakh toilets), and housing programs like Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam (1 lakh houses at ₹3,500 crore) and PM Housing Scheme (3.30 lakh houses between May 2021 and October 2024). The constituency has connectivity through National Highway 48 and State Highway 131. Educational initiatives included the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme and Mission Iyarkai for environmental awareness in schools. However, persistent water scarcity remains the constituency's most critical challenge. The Badethalaavaai canal project, promised in AIADMK's 2016 manifesto to fill 28 lakes fed by River Thenpennai, remained unfulfilled as of 2021. Much of Bargur (except Kaveripattinam union) faces dry conditions with agriculture dependent on bore well irrigation, and many borewells have dried up, affecting both farming and livestock. The AIADMK also faced internal factionalism between local leaders, which impacted governance. At the state level, Tamil Nadu attracted significant industrial investments during this period, including major manufacturing plants worth thousands of crores, though specific industrial projects in Bargur were not detailed. As the 2026 elections approach (scheduled for April 23, with results on May 4), voters face a choice between continuing with DMK's governance or returning to AIADMK. While statewide development schemes have reached Bargur, the critical water crisis and unfulfilled irrigation promises remain unresolved. Voters should consider both the implementation of welfare schemes over the past five years and the persistent challenges around water security and agricultural sustainability that continue to affect their daily lives.
