Aravakurichi constituency in Karur district witnessed a significant political shift in 2021 when DMK's R. Elango won decisively with 93,369 votes (52.72%), defeating BJP's K. Annamalai by 24,816 votes, ending AIADMK's decade-long rule. The 82.38% voter turnout reflected high public engagement. From 2021 to 2026, the constituency benefited from several state-wide schemes under the DMK government including the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme for students, Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai providing ₹1,000 monthly assistance to women, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam doorstep healthcare launched in August 2021, and the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam housing scheme. Infrastructure development included national highway expansion projects and state road upgrades to improve connectivity along NH 7 linking Tiruchirapalli and Coimbatore. However, serious challenges persist that have caused widespread public frustration. The most critical issue is severe drinking water scarcity, with residents receiving supply only once every four to five days. The promised combined Cauvery drinking water project remains unfulfilled, forcing residents to rely on stored water. Implementation of the central government's Jal Jeevan Mission has been slow. Industrial development remains virtually non-existent despite the constituency's proximity to Karur, a major textile hub, leading to high unemployment rates and economic stagnation in this largely agrarian area. Voters express deep disillusionment with what they perceive as political apathy and broken promises from successive governments. As the 2026 Assembly elections approach (scheduled for April 23, 2026, with counting on May 4, 2026), voters face a choice between continuing with the DMK's welfare-focused governance or seeking alternatives. While state-wide schemes have provided some relief in healthcare, education, and women's welfare, the fundamental issues of water supply, industrial development, and job creation remain largely unaddressed. The BJP's strong 38.71% vote share in 2021 signals emerging political competition. Voters should weigh the implementation of social welfare programs against the unfulfilled infrastructure promises and persistent livelihood concerns when making their decision.
