JOSEPH SAMUEL

Ambattur constituency was represented by Joseph Samuel of the DMK from 2021 to 2026, after he won the 2021 election with 114,554 votes (48.14%) defeating AIADMK's V. Alexander. The period saw implementation of several state and central schemes including the Jal Jeevan Mission providing drinking water to over 7.15 lakh rural households across Tamil Nadu, the Kalaignar Nagarpura Mempattu Thittam urban development scheme with ₹1,000 crore allocation, and skill development programs like Naan Mudhalvan. Major infrastructure projects included the ₹21.67 crore Ambattur Railway Station upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (delayed beyond March 2024 deadline) and a ₹9.5 crore pedestrian subway under construction as of October 2023. However, Ambattur's industrial and residential areas continued to face significant civic challenges. Large parts of the constituency lack proper underground drainage, causing untreated sewage to contaminate major water bodies like Korattur, Ambattur, and Puzhal lakes, leading to foul odors and declining water quality. Incomplete storm water drain work by the Greater Chennai Corporation put over 1,000 industries and residential areas at flood risk. The long-demanded widening of the Chennai-Tiruttani Road from Padi to Avadi remained pending as of April 2026, with no major progress reported. Residents also continued demanding a dedicated government hospital, as they currently must travel to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital or Stanley Hospital for emergencies. Notably, Joseph Samuel was not renominated by the DMK for the 2026 elections; the party instead fielded A.P. Poornima. Voters should consider both the implementation of state-level welfare schemes and the unresolved local infrastructure and sanitation challenges that have persisted throughout this period, particularly regarding sewerage, road widening, healthcare facilities, and environmental degradation of water bodies.
