Sampangi.S.R, 46, is the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate for the Veppanahalli Assembly constituency in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. A 10th pass education holder working in the crusher industry, Sampangi has declared assets of Rs. 18.63 crore with liabilities of Rs. 6.74 crore. This marks his first foray into electoral politics, riding the debut wave of actor Vijay's newly formed TVK party, which was founded on February 2, 2024. Veppanahalli, located in Krishnagiri district, was formed after constituency delimitation in 2008 and was won by AIADMK's K.P. Munusamy in the 2021 elections. Sampangi faces an uphill battle as a first-time candidate in a constituency with established political players. His party TVK is contesting all 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, positioning itself as an alternative to the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary, with Vijay declaring the BJP as TVK's "only ideological enemy" and DMK as its "only political enemy." The party was rocked by the tragic Karur crowd crush on September 27, 2025, where 41 people died during a political rally, leading to FIRs against party leaders including General Secretary N. Anand for culpable homicide. Additionally, internal issues emerged when a TVK leader attempted suicide in February 2026 alleging Rs. 1.6 million fraud by a district secretary. The party has also faced counter-allegations from DMK leaders who accused TVK of accepting black money, while TVK has accused the DMK government of corruption in the state liquor corporation Tasmac. Voters in Veppanahalli should note that Sampangi represents a completely new political force with no legislative track record. His candidacy is primarily driven by the popularity of actor Vijay and TVK's ambitious manifesto promising monthly financial assistance for homemakers, AI-driven governance, farmer debt relief, and free health services. However, the party's organizational maturity, handling of the Karur tragedy, and ability to deliver on governance promises remain untested.
