Umadevi Periyapaandi, 29, is a postgraduate and self-employed farmer raising goats, cows, and chickens, who represents the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) in the Valparai (SC) constituency. She first contested in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections where she secured 7,632 votes (5.25%), finishing third behind the winning AIADMK candidate T. K. Amulkandasami who received 71,672 votes (49.34%) and CPI's M. Arumugham with 59,449 votes (40.93%). Her party, founded by actor-turned-politician Seeman, has emerged as a significant third force in Tamil Nadu politics, focusing on Tamil nationalism, social equality, and opposition to caste-based discrimination, with its vote share growing from 1.76% in 2016 to 8.19% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Despite this upward trajectory, NTK has been embroiled in controversies, particularly the January 2025 protests against the Telugu film 'Kingdom', which NTK claimed misrepresented the Tamil Eelam issue. These protests led to attacks on theaters across Tamil Nadu, resulting in the arrest of 16 NTK cadres, with the Madras High Court intervening to direct police protection for theaters. For the 2026 elections, Umadevi is contesting again in Valparai against AIADMK's D. Lakshmana Singh, DMK's A. Sudhakar, and TVK's Sreedharan. Her campaign focuses on local development demands including job creation in non-polluting sectors like IT, upgrading the primary health center to a government hospital, establishing tourism infrastructure like botanical gardens and boat houses, and improving water irrigation for agriculture. With declared assets of Rs. 6.29 lakhs (including a liability of Rs. 1.80 lakhs), no criminal cases, and a clean personal record, she represents NTK's attempt to present grassroots candidates who challenge the DMK-AIADMK duopoly. Voters should know that while Umadevi herself has no controversies, her party's aggressive protest tactics and confrontational political style have drawn both admiration from supporters who see it as principled opposition, and criticism from those concerned about law and order. Pre-poll surveys suggest NTK may improve its vote share to 4.9% but is unlikely to win seats, making this a test of whether the party can convert growing support into electoral victories.
