R. Kumaraguru, 64, is a three-term AIADMK legislator who has represented Ulundurpet constituency in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi District since 2011. A 12th-pass politician who rose through party ranks, Kumaraguru first entered the assembly in 2006 from Thirunavalur constituency, which was later eliminated during reorganization. His political career peaked in 2016 when he defeated DMDK founder Vijayakanth from Ulundurpet with 36.04% of votes, securing his third consecutive legislative term. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Tamil Nadu from 2019 to 2021, a prestigious religious appointment. The Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail on the condition that he hold another public meeting to offer an unconditional apology—a humiliating requirement for a senior politician. This incident, combined with the two criminal cases declared in his current affidavit (involving cheating, criminal intimidation, and causing hurt), raises questions about his conduct. Currently serving as District Party Secretary for AIADMK in Kallakurichi District, Kumaraguru's asset declarations show significant financial movement. His total assets increased from Rs 2.71 crore in 2021 to Rs 4.98 crore in 2025, while his liabilities surged dramatically from Rs 11.89 lacs to Rs 90.15 lacs—a seven-fold increase in debt during a period when he was out of office. Notably, there is no publicly available information linking him to specific development projects or government schemes during his 15 years as MLA, which may explain his eventual electoral defeat despite three previous victories.
