Sankar K., 50, is a first-time political candidate contesting from Udumalaipettai constituency on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ticket in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A literate businessman running a garments cutting waste business, Sankar represents TVK's attempt to challenge the traditional AIADMK dominance in this industrial town known for its textile and weaving industries. With declared assets of ₹39.19 lakhs (₹14.44 lakhs movable and ₹24.75 lakhs immovable) and liabilities of ₹7.02 lakhs, his financial profile appears consistent with his stated profession as a small-scale entrepreneur in the garment sector.
Sankar enters politics through TVK, a party founded on February 2, 2024, by popular actor Vijay, who announced on March 18, 2026, that TVK would contest all 234 seats independently. The party released its complete candidate list on March 30, 2026, with Sankar named for Udumalaipettai. TVK positions itself as a secular, socially just alternative inspired by Periyar, Ambedkar, and CN Annadurai, emphasizing Tamil nationalism and social justice. The party's manifesto includes targeted promises for the textile-heavy Udumalaipettai region: a ₹15,000 crore state guarantee fund for struggling MSMEs, scrapping peak hour electricity charges for small businesses, 50% raw material subsidy for weavers, ₹3,000 monthly pension for weavers, and ₹10 lakh insurance coverage per weaver family.
However, Sankar's debut campaign comes amid significant party-level controversies. The tragic September 27, 2025, crowd crush at a TVK rally in Karur killed 41 people and injured around 100, leading to FIRs against TVK leadership including general secretary N. Anand for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, endangering lives, and disobedience to lawful orders. Additional FIRs have been registered at K5 Peravallur Police Station in Chennai (March 30, 2026) and Koodakovil Police Station in Madurai (August 21, 2025) related to TVK campaign activities. Despite these challenges, opinion polls suggest TVK is emerging as a credible third force, particularly among youth voters, though Udumalaipettai remains a tough battleground where AIADMK's Udumalai K. Radhakrishnan won by 50,618 votes in 2021.
Voters in Udumalaipettai face a choice between an established incumbent and a first-time candidate representing a nascent party with ambitious welfare promises but limited governance experience. Sankar's background in the garment waste business connects him to the local textile economy, but his ability to translate TVK's state-level momentum into constituency-level victories remains untested. The absence of prior electoral or administrative experience, combined with party-level legal troubles, presents both risks and the appeal of a political outsider untainted by incumbency issues.
