M. Rajasekaran, 66, is a postgraduate agriculturist contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Tiruchirappalli (West) on an Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazhagam (AMMK) ticket. His political journey reflects the shifting alliances characteristic of Tamil Nadu politics — he was first elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Thottiam constituency in 2006 as an Indian National Congress candidate, later joined AIADMK, and in 2017 aligned with T.T.V. Dhinakaran's newly formed AMMK after the latter's expulsion from AIADMK. He previously contested Tiruchirappalli (West) in 2016 as an AIADMK candidate but lost to DMK's K.N. Nehru, who secured 51.30% of votes against AIADMK's 35.47%. Rajasekaran has declared assets worth ₹6.11 crore (₹1.66 crore movable and ₹4.45 crore immovable) with liabilities of ₹2.67 crore, and has no criminal cases on record. His current campaign focuses on criticizing the incumbent DMK government for alleged development failures, particularly highlighting inadequate drinking water facilities, poor road infrastructure, and pollution of the Uyyakondan Canal. He has accused K.N. Nehru, who has served as MLA and Minister for the constituency for the past 10 years, of failing to implement vital development projects and alleged corruption in municipal recruitment processes. The 2026 contest presents significant challenges for Rajasekaran. He faces a multi-cornered fight against the well-entrenched K.N. Nehru (DMK), actor-turned-politician Vijay's TVK candidate G. Ramamoorthy, and NTK's Bhuvaneswari in one of central Tamil Nadu's most urbanized constituencies with diverse voter blocs including urban middle-class families, government employees, business owners, and students. His party AMMK, despite contesting 165 seats in 2021, failed to win any legislative seats, making his electoral prospects uncertain despite NDA alliance support from BJP, AIADMK, and PMK. Voters should note that while Rajasekaran brings legislative experience from his 2006-2011 term and raises legitimate infrastructure concerns, he represents a party with no current representation in the Assembly and faces an uphill battle against a three-time incumbent.
