K.G. Arunraj, 46, is a medical doctor and former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer who brings unique administrative credentials to Tamil Nadu's newest political party. After serving in the Income Tax department across Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Maharashtra, where he was involved in several high-profile raids on political figures between 2017-2021, Arunraj took voluntary retirement in May 2025 to join politics full-time. Within a month, in June 2025, actor-turned-politician Vijay appointed him as the Propaganda & Policy General Secretary of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), making him a key strategist for the party's 2026 electoral debut. However, Arunraj's candidacy has not been without controversy. The DMK has accused him of leading a 2020 tax raid on actor Vijay's residence when he was an IRS officer—allegations both Arunraj and TVK have firmly denied. His background in conducting high-profile Income Tax raids on political figures has raised questions about whether his investigations were politically motivated. More significantly, the TVK leadership faces serious legal scrutiny following the September 2025 Karur crowd crush during a Vijay rally that killed 41 people and injured over 100, with the party's General Secretary N. Anand charged with culpable homicide, though Arunraj himself is not named in the case. For voters in Tiruchengodu, Arunraj represents both promise and uncertainty. He brings technocratic expertise and policy depth to a constituency facing infrastructure challenges, but he's a political newcomer in his first-ever electoral contest. His assets of ₹12.77 crore appear reasonable for a former IRS officer and doctor, with no declared criminal cases. Whether his administrative background and TVK's ambitious promises can translate into electoral success against established parties like AIADMK and DMK remains the central question for voters in this assembly seat.
