P. Geetha Jeevan

P. Geetha Jeevan, 55, is a senior DMK politician currently serving as Tamil Nadu's Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment and MLA from Thoothuvalai constituency in Thoothukudi district. Born on May 6, 1970, she comes from a political family as the daughter of N. Periasamy Nadar, a former MLA from the same constituency. She holds a post-graduate degree in commerce from A.P.C. Mahalakshmi College for Women in Thoothuvalai and has declared assets worth Rs. 27.19 crore with liabilities of Rs. 8.07 crore. Her political career spans nearly three decades, beginning as chairperson of Thoothuvalai District Panchayat from 1996 to 2006. She first became an MLA in 2006 and served as Minister for Social Welfare from 2006 to 2011. She faced defeat in the 2011 elections during the AIADMK wave but bounced back to win in 2016 and 2021. Following the DMK's return to power in 2021, she was appointed Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment in Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's cabinet, a portfolio she continues to hold. Geetha Jeevan is recognized for her unwavering loyalty to the DMK and focus on social welfare issues, particularly women's empowerment and child protection. Her ministry has focused on increasing crime reporting by women as a positive indicator of growing awareness and support systems. She has one criminal case registered (Cr. No. 258/2014 at South PS Thoothukudi), though no serious IPC charges are listed in her affidavit. No recent corruption allegations or major controversies have been reported against her. She is currently contesting from Thoothuvalai in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, seeking her fourth consecutive term as MLA.
