Kalaivanan Poondi K

K. Poondi Kalaivanan, 61, is a DMK MLA representing the politically significant Tiruvarur constituency in Tamil Nadu. A 12th pass with a background in agriculture and rice business, Kalaivanan rose through DMK ranks serving as district secretary and organizer before being fielded in the crucial 2019 by-election for the seat left vacant by the death of party patriarch M. Karunanidhi. He won decisively with 117,616 votes (57%), defeating AIADMK's R. Jeevanantham, and successfully retained the seat in 2021 with 108,906 votes (52.29%). His political career has been marked by intense confrontations with the AIADMK during their rule. In July 2011, he was at the center of a major standoff when police stopped then-DMK leader M.K. Stalin's convoy attempting to prevent Kalaivanan's arrest over allegations that he prevented students from attending school during anti-government protests. He was subsequently detained under the Goondas Act, a detention the Madras High Court later quashed. During this period, over 300 cases were reportedly filed against DMK functionaries, which the party characterized as political vendetta involving land-grab allegations. Currently declaring assets worth ₹11.06 crore with liabilities of ₹1.96 crore, Kalaivanan maintains his base in agriculture and rice business while serving as MLA. His affidavit shows one pending criminal case (Cr. No 429/2021 at Thiruvarur Police Station). Within DMK's Tiruvarur district structure, he controls influence in Tiruvarur and Nannilam constituencies while facing internal competition from TRB Rajaa who holds sway in Mannargudi and Thiruthuraipoondi. Voters should know that Kalaivanan represents DMK's hold on Karunanidhi's legacy constituency with proven electoral success, but his career includes controversial episodes during opposition periods. His effectiveness as MLA in delivering constituency development remains less documented in public records compared to his political battles.
