Nainar Nagenthran

Nainar Nagenthran, 65, is a postgraduate businessman and the current state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, elected in April 2025. His political career began with the AIADMK, where he served as a cabinet minister under Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa from 2001 to 2006, handling key portfolios including Electricity, Industry, and Transport. He was elected MLA from Tirunelveli in 2001 and 2011 as an AIADMK candidate, and again in 2021 as a BJP candidate with a margin of 23,107 votes, demonstrating his political resilience across party lines. However, Nagenthran's career has been marred by serious legal controversies. In December 2010, the DVAC filed a chargesheet against him, his wife, and four relatives for allegedly accumulating ₹3.9 crore in disproportionate assets during his ministerial tenure, including undisclosed land and gold jewelry. More recently, in April 2024, he was implicated in a major cash-for-votes scandal where the Election Commission and police seized ₹3.98 crore from three men allegedly acting on his instructions, with one accused possessing his identity documents. He has also faced multiple arrests and FIRs for hate speech, including a January 2018 arrest for announcing a ₹10 crore reward for attacking lyricist Vairamuthu, and a June 2024 FIR for allegedly promoting Islamophobic rhetoric at a Madurai conference. Nagenthran left the AIADMK in 2017 following Jayalalithaa's death and joined the BJP, where he served as Vice President and legislative leader before becoming state president. For the 2026 Assembly elections, he is contesting from Sattur instead of his traditional Tirunelveli seat, strategically leveraging Mukkulathor community support. His affidavit declares assets worth ₹38.55 crore and 6 criminal cases with 10 serious IPC charges including bribery, promoting enmity, cheating, and defamation. While his AIADMK experience helped formalize the BJP-AIADMK alliance, his controversial statements, legal troubles, and inflammatory rhetoric have made him a polarizing figure whose suitability as a frontline leader continues to be questioned within the party and by political observers.
