S. Vetrivel, 54, is a three-decade veteran of the AIADMK, having joined the party in 1991. Born and educated in the Salem area (Little Flower School and Sowdeswari College of Arts and Science), he was also a cricket player who represented Tamil Nadu in under-14 and under-23 teams before entering politics. His political career progressed from grassroots local governance—serving as chairman of Karuppur town panchayat from 2011 to 2015—to becoming an MLA for Omalur constituency, where he won with a decisive margin of 19,956 votes. Vetrivel's career has been significantly marked by controversy, particularly a 2018 legal case involving the release of a video purportedly showing late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in a hospital bed. The Madras High Court granted him anticipatory bail, with Vetrivel claiming the case was filed under pressure from AIADMK ministers to implicate him under non-bailable provisions.
