N. D. Venkatachalam, popularly known as Thoppu Venkatachalam, is a 70-year-old politician with 5th standard education now contesting from Perundurai as an independent candidate. He won the Perundurai constituency twice as an AIADMK candidate—first in 2011 with a commanding 60.15% vote share (89,960 votes) and again in 2016 with 44.05% (80,292 votes).
