C. Joseph Vijay

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, known as Thalapathy Vijay, was born on June 22, 1974, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu. He rose to become one of Tamil cinema's biggest superstars over a 30-year career before making a dramatic entry into politics. In February 2024, Vijay launched the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party and announced he would gradually quit cinema to focus on politics. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections mark his electoral debut, where he is contesting from two constituencies—Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East—in an aggressive strategy to establish statewide presence and challenge the entrenched DMK-AIADMK duopoly. With declared assets exceeding ₹648 crores, Vijay is among Tamil Nadu's wealthiest candidates, though his film career earnings justify significant wealth. Voters in Perambur face a unique choice: a charismatic first-time candidate with massive star power and progressive promises, but also someone whose transition from cinema to governance remains untested, whose campaign has been marred by tragedy and legal questions, and whose organizational depth beyond personality cult is uncertain.
