R. Sundararaj, a 59-year-old businessman from Ottapidaram (SC) constituency in Tamil Nadu, has had a turbulent political career marked by electoral success followed by controversy and decline. He achieved his political breakthrough in the 2016 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections as an AIADMK candidate, winning with 65,071 votes (40.57%) in a closely contested race decided by a mere 493-vote margin.
