V. Reddiarpatti Narayanan, 58, is a former MLA from Nanguneri constituency in Tamil Nadu with a volatile political career marked by electoral swings and recent party defection. A 10th-pass businessman involved in real estate, he rose to prominence when he won the 2019 Nanguneri by-election as an AIADMK candidate with an impressive 55.88% vote share (95,377 votes), defeating INC's Ruby R. Manoharan by a margin of 33,445 votes. However, his fortunes reversed in the 2021 Assembly elections when he lost the same seat to the same opponent by over 16,000 votes, ending his legislative tenure after just two years. In March 2026, Narayanan made headlines by resigning from AIADMK in protest against the party leadership's decision to allocate the Nanguneri seat to the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), a breakaway faction led by T.T.V. Dhinakaran. Calling this a betrayal, he immediately joined actor Vijay's newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded in February 2024. TVK fielded him as their candidate for Nanguneri in the 2026 elections, making him one of the party's first former legislators and a test case for its electoral viability in southern Tamil Nadu. Narayanan's affidavit declares assets worth over ₹13.74 crore, including ₹12.27 crore in immovable property and ₹1.47 crore in movable assets, with liabilities of ₹2.73 crore. His wealth is consistent with his declared profession in real estate. He has no criminal cases on record. However, his new party TVK has been embroiled in significant controversy following a September 2025 crowd crush at a Karur rally that killed 41 people and injured around 100, leading to arrests of three party leaders on charges including culpable homicide. The party has also faced allegations of corruption by DMK leaders, though these are primarily political accusations rather than legal cases. Voters in Nanguneri face a choice between a candidate with proven electoral appeal (2019 victory) but also a recent loss (2021), who has switched parties at a critical juncture. His move to TVK represents both a gamble on a nascent political force and a continuation of his local political presence.
