Selvam is a 42-year-old textile industry worker and first-time political candidate contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections from Mettur constituency on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ticket. With an 8th-grade education, Selvam represents the party's attempt to field grassroots candidates in its debut electoral contest. He has declared assets worth approximately ₹28 lakhs (₹10 lakhs movable and ₹18 lakhs immovable) with liabilities of ₹23 lakhs, consistent with his working-class background in the textile sector. His affidavit shows no criminal cases. Selvam is contesting under the banner of TVK, a party founded by popular Tamil actor Vijay in February 2024. The party has positioned itself as a new political force challenging the DMK-AIADMK duopoly in Tamil Nadu. TVK's 2026 manifesto includes ambitious promises such as ₹2,500 monthly assistance for homemakers, ₹4,000 for unemployed graduates, free healthcare with cancer insurance, and a vision to transform Tamil Nadu into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. The manifesto also emphasizes AI-driven governance, agricultural support including debt relief for farmers, and infrastructure development. However, TVK has been significantly affected by controversy. The party faced severe criticism following a crowd crush tragedy at a Vijay-led rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, which resulted in 41 deaths and over 100 injuries. FIRs were filed against TVK leadership including General Secretary Bussy Anand and other senior officials for alleged negligence, mismanagement, and failure to follow safety protocols. A CBI investigation was initiated, and the incident has cast a shadow over the party's credibility just months before the 2026 elections. Party leader Vijay himself disclosed two pending FIRs in his election affidavit related to incidents in Chennai and Madurai. Voters in Mettur should know that Selvam is an untested political candidate with no prior electoral history, banking entirely on the appeal of Vijay and the TVK brand. While the party's welfare-oriented manifesto may resonate with working-class voters, its organizational capacity and governance credentials remain unproven. The Mettur constituency has historically been contested by established parties, and Selvam faces an uphill battle in a constituency where an independent candidate named Selvan received only 1.29% of votes (2,823 votes) in 2021. His success will likely depend on whether Vijay's popularity can translate into actual votes for relatively unknown candidates like himself.
